A Welcome Message from Ms. Begley

Fall 2018  Dear ASFS Community, Welcome to a wonderful academic year with plans to help you engage in the school community and the classroom environment.  On behalf of our staff, we want to ensure a rich and rigorous curriculum for your child(ren) while creating a welcoming, nurturing, and safe environment in which to learn and grow. During the summer, we were able to have a new primary outdoor play equipment installed for our primary students and continue to work with the county to have our turf playing field installed.  A great deal of cleaning and preparation has been completed by our custodial staff led by Ms. Olga Almengor.  Our teachers have been busily planning with colleagues, taking classes and workshop, and preparing their classrooms for the arrival of their students on Tuesday, September 4th.  They will receive all families in their classrooms on Thursday. August 30th from 3:00-4:00 pm for Open House. If you have not completed your registration, please do so before the first day of school so we are fully prepared to receive your child(ren).   This year we will open our doors to approximately 700 students in grade kindergarten through fifth grade representing 42 countries, 33 languages and dialects, and 6 different embassies.  Thank for your choosing our school and the incredible academic and social environment that is provided by our staff. As we begin our 23rd year as ASFS, we embark upon some unique circumstances with our School Board and Superintendent, Dr. Murphy proposing boundary changes for most of Arlington Public Schools to align schools with the appropriate number of students to fit each building. While boundary changes are never easy, we have confidence in our School Board and Arlington Leadership Team to develop this plan to be implemented in fall 2019.  Please stay informed by following the APS website under Engaged and watching or attending School Board work sessions and meetings. These meetings are all live streamed and can be watched from the comfort of your home.  Our PTA is working very hard to help our community keep informed and work together to help all of us to embrace the final decisions. Our PTA President, Dena Porter has held summer meetings with small groups, talking with Central Office staff members, and our building level Executive Board to share information and insight. The PTA has many activities and events planned that will help you become involved in the school culture and even more opportunities for you to volunteer. You can reach our school website by going to the APS website and clicking in Arlington Science Focus in the upper left hand part of the screen under “schools.”  This will take you to our webpage where you will see photos of all our staff classroom webpages, and the PTA webpage.  So much information is provided to families, we encourage you to take the opportunity to read the various sections. Ms. Jones, our Assistant Principal, and I want to welcome you to ASFS and ask you to contact us if you have questions, concerns, compliment, and suggestions.  Our office staff responds to phone calls from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm if you would like to make an appointment.  After that time, you will hear an answering machine with options to leave messages.  We are here to work with you and your family to meet the needs of your child(ren) in their academic, social and emotional development. Please take this opportunity to become engage in our community. We are, “ONE TEAM Where Together Everyone Achieves More”.
